I had to write a review after I finish reading this book! The author had a very unique and different approach to the idea of finding motivation. A very ‘untraditional’ way, and this made the read so much more entertaining.
The book title was catchy. The pretty grapefruit pink color was appealing, that’s why I pick it up. The author is Elan Gale, the executive producer of The Bachelor. He definitely made this book a fun read!
By the way, this is a 18+ rated book! It doesn’t take long to figure out. Read as little as the first 5 pages, and you will find tons of sexual humor and taboo language, this was his tone and style throughout the book. He sounds like the friend who throws in a f bomb in their talk whenever possible lol. I found him very real, you can feel his emotion and passion in his writing. This is truly an entertaining read!
In his book he stress on finding motivation through negative emotions. So here are some of the emotions he emphasize – anger, regret, vengeance, shame, anxiety, desperation, devastation, and etc.
He is not a supporter to people who are positive and optimistic in terms of finding motivation. In fact you can feel he gets quite angry about it. He maybe overreacting but he is not wrong.
The founder of Patagonia also said something similar. I am glad I found his quote on google. Here it is y’all.
“There is no difference between a Pessimist who says – Oh it’s hopeless so don’t bother doing anything, and an Optimist who says – Don’t bother doing anything, it’s going to turn out fine anyways. Either way, nothing happens.”
He then goes on to describes how powerful negative energy is compare to positive energy. You require time to develop a good mood but only take seconds to get into a bad one. Here is the fun part. Let me give you ther real life example –
You feel great and recharge after a long weekend. You are energize, you believe you can tackle down anything that comes in your way. Back to work, your boss decides to give you a lecture at the start of your morning. For something you thought you did fine, but not to him. Bam! Now you feel like crap.
Here is one for the Ladies. You had an amazing day. You come home to share with your partner how amazing your day went but only to find that he didn’t care to listen. Bam again! Your rage just went skyrocketing high!
So what do you do? Here I drew a diagram for you based on Alan’s way to finding motivation.
Let’s apply example one to this theory.
Negative Emotions – Your boss never appreciate anything you do. You are at work eight hours a day. You have no time left for yourself. You are feeling devastated.
Determination – That’s it! Make that feeling of devastation work for you. You know what you don’t want. Now get to what you want, what you vision your life should be.
Motivation – Work towards your vision. Remember your emotions. Remember the dread you feel about the comings of Monday. The depressing 8 hours a day for 5 days a week AND during the prime time of your life. Yikes! Well, these moments are for you to respond to, not to be optimistic and forget.
