Do you like Mario Kart? What if I tell you the luge ride is like real-life Mario Kart? Except you will not get turtle shell thrown at you or squid ink splatter at your face. The Skyline Luge is Calgary’s hidden gem! It’s fun for anyone – you can go with family or friends, or for the ladies – bring your guy here to impress them >:) My boyfriend and I love it! He was in disbelief that I beat him on all our rides. You can even hold team event and birthday parties! This is one of the activities you cannot miss in Calgary. The luge ride is not too kiddish like the bumper cars yet not too grown up like Go-Kart – it’s the perfect in between. I had such a great time I regret not getting the max 5 ride pass. The luge ride is located at Winsport Calgary Olympic Park . The season starts July to Early October – the hours of opening changes so make sure to check before you go!
So what exactly is the Skyline Luge Ride?
As from their website – “Skyline Luge is a unique wheeled gravity ride that provides riders full control over their descent on purpose-built track. With more than 50 twists and turns and covering a distance of over 1800 metres (5905 feet) on a continuous downhill trajectory, Skyline Luge Calgary has the longest track in the world. It’s certain to bring smiles to the faces of both the young and old. Children less than 110cm tall can share a ride with an adult, so no-one misses out and the whole family gets to have some safe fun.”
There is only 7 locations in the world that offers the skyline luge! Yes, you read the above. Calgary has it best -We have the longest track in the world!
Buying Your Ticket
You can purchase the rides online or at the door. We purchased our ticket online assuming we can skip the line up, but we were wrong. You will still have to line up like the others to get the ride pass. The line moves fast so it’s not a big deal. I’d still recommend you to check online for ticket first as deal was found to be offer on Groupon and their website before.
Wear a Helmet
You are require to wear a helmet for this ride. You may bring your own helmet providing they are not a full-faced helmet – so something like a bike or hockey helmet will do. The luge helmet are very fun bright looking – group pic is awesome with it! You can find the helmets in bins by the ticket booth. You can’t miss it!
Taking the Lift
Now you are ready to take the lift! Lifts are intimidating. Is anybody out there with me? I have gone on lifts before for snowtubing or sightseeing. Nothing ever happens but I am always freaking out. Good news is we are not going up a mountain, the lift ride takes a little less than 5 minutes. At the end of the lift, be sure to smile at the camera for a picture 🙂
The Line Up and Training
Once you reach the top. There are 2 lines – “1st Ride of the Day” and “If You Have a Luge Stamp”. Luge stamp are given for multiple riders. There was about 10-15 people in line for us that day, but it goes quick. I can say the wait was less than 5 minutes. Snap some photos while you are waiting in line, you can capture a beautiful scenery of the city here at the top of the hill.
As a first time rider, you will be receiving a 1 to 2 minutes training. The luge is very simple to control. You steer by turning the handle left and right. Speed is gain as you slide down the hill. To slow down your luge, you pull back the handle.
Enjoy the Ride!
Now you are ready to go! There are banners across the track reminding riders not to race or bump other riders. You are going at a pretty decent speed so injury can happen. If you have a slow rider in front of you, you may pass them, just make sure you are do at a safe time. What I mean by safe time is when the track is wide and straight enough for you to pass. There are sharp turns. You will find yourself skimming through mini turns prior to a big turn at times. These are the times I would not pass another rider for safety. Somewhere down the track, you will have your photo snap. Great if you have time to smile at the camera. I found myself enjoying the ride too much to know where the camera was at. You can buy your photo at the ticket booth.
The entire ride takes about 5 minutes. Once you get off your luge, you may feel your butt and hand a little numb and itchy due to the shakiness of the rough track. Don’t worry, it goes away fast. And it will not stop you from riding again 🙂
Still Got Time?
We spent about an hour on our 3 rides. If you have some extra time, try out the Paskapoo Slopes city hike 9 minutes drive away, located behind COP.
